OIL VALLEY VICK
The Legend
During the Oil Region's heyday oilmen would take an odd little brown worm known as the "Wooly Bear" that could be found in abundance in NW PA and was known to repel the staining effects of the paraffin rich oil found in the Oil Region of Pennsylvania, they would dip this little worm in the rich crude on both ends. Superstition said that if the oil stayed on the Wooly Bear it would be a hard winter, if the Wooly Bear could repel the oil or most of it a mild winter was in store.
Through the years the Wooly Bear has adapted to this oil dipping tradition and now permanently bears the marks of the oil staining. From Grandparent, to parent, to child we are brought up with the Wooly Bear's uncanny foresight to predict the winter by looking at the black ends of the "bear".
This year however, is different, as one Wooly Bear known as "Oil Valley Vick" wants to make his prediction official.
Come see Vick in his first ever weather forecasting premier at noon on Friday, October 24 at Justus Park.
